MP4 vs MOV vs WebM: choose for the destination

A plain-English comparison of MP4, MOV, and WebM, plus why the codec matters as much as the extension.

Choose the format your destination accepts, then check the video and audio codecs. MP4 is a common delivery choice, MOV appears in many recording and editing workflows, and WebM is designed for web media. None is automatically the highest-quality choice.

The extension is only part of the story

A container holds video, audio, and sometimes other tracks. A codec describes how a stream is encoded. You need to know both when diagnosing compatibility. Two files ending in .mp4 can behave differently because the video inside is different.

Ask three questions before choosing an output: Where will it play? What does that destination accept? Which parts of the source must survive? The last question matters if you need multiple audio tracks, captions, or special image properties.

For a sharing copy, inspect the details your audience needs. Slides need readable text; demonstrations need clear motion; interviews need intelligible speech. The smallest acceptable file for one task may be unsuitable for another. Keep the master and create a delivery version for the task.

Choose with a short checklist

  1. Read the destination’s current upload or playback requirements.
  2. List any required subtitles, audio languages, transparency, or HDR behavior.
  3. Select a compatible container and codecs together.
  4. Make a short sample containing the most demanding part of the footage.
  5. Test that sample where the finished video will actually be used.

If you are handing off footage for editing, ask the editor for their preferred settings. A heavily compressed sharing copy and an editing master serve different purposes. Sending both without clear filenames can create confusion, so label each copy by its intended use.
