How to convert MOV to MP4 without the guesswork

Start with the destination

A file that plays on your own computer can still fail in someone else’s app. Before converting, identify where the finished video needs to work: an upload form, a presentation, a phone, or an editing project. Look for that destination’s accepted formats and size limit. A specific requirement is more useful than a promise to support “every device.”

Keep the original MOV. Create a separate delivery copy and use a filename that identifies its purpose, such as interview-sharing.mp4. This gives you a way back if the new file has missing audio or unexpected colors.

Choose a method

A remux copies compressed streams into a different container. It does not improve picture quality or fix an unsupported video codec. Encoding creates a new video stream and involves different quality and compatibility decisions.

Make a compatibility copy with HandBrake

1. Download HandBrake from its official website and open a copy of your source video.
2. Choose a preset appropriate to your destination and source resolution. Select MP4 as the container.
3. Check that the video uses H.264 and the required audio track is included as AAC. Do not increase resolution simply because a higher option exists.
4. Choose a new destination filename and start the encode. For important footage, make a short trial before processing the entire recording.

Check the result before deleting anything

• Open the output in the actual destination app, not just your usual video player.
• Watch the beginning, a section with motion, and the end. Check voices against lip movement.
• Compare orientation, framing, colors, duration, and any required subtitles.
• Check the final file size. A different extension alone does not guarantee a smaller file.

If the file remains incompatible, collect the destination’s error message and the output codec details. Repeating the same conversion with a different filename is unlikely to address the underlying mismatch.
