To change a movie file format on Windows or Mac, open it in a converter and save a separate output file in the format your destination accepts. HandBrake can make an H.264 MP4 copy. Renaming usually changes only the filename; remuxing changes the container, while encoding changes the video or audio inside it. Keep your original until the new copy works.
Choose what actually needs to change
Start with the app or upload form that rejects the video. Check its accepted container, video codec, audio codec and size limit. A filename ending in MP4 cannot tell you whether its video is H.264 or HEVC.
| Method | What changes | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Rename | The filename only | A known compatible file is rejected solely because of its suffix; see the specific M4V exception. |
| Remux / rewrap | The container; selected compressed streams are copied | The existing codecs are accepted by both the output container and destination. |
| Encode / transcode | A new video or audio stream | You need a different codec, resolution, size or picture treatment. |
This guide covers video files. Changing a document or photo extension has different requirements. For the container basics, read MP4 vs MOV vs WebM.
Make an MP4 copy in HandBrake
Use the desktop HandBrake application on Windows or Mac for an unprotected video it can open. The following is a sharing workflow for ordinary SDR footage, rather than an archival or HDR preservation recipe.
- Install HandBrake from its official site, launch it and select Open Source. Open your video; if several titles appear, select the intended clip.
- Choose General → Fast 1080p30 for a delivery copy within those limits. This preset can reduce 4K footage or footage above 30 fps; choose another suitable preset if those details must remain.
- Confirm MP4 under Summary, H.264 (x264) under Video, and the intended track with AAC under Audio. Inspect Dimensions for cropping and orientation.
- Use Save As / Browse to choose a new .mp4 filename in a separate output folder. Start the encode and wait for completion.
- Open the saved output in the actual destination. Compare duration, speech, framing and a fast-moving scene before processing other files.
When a container change is enough
A compatible H.264/AAC source may only need repackaging. In Shutter Encoder, add the source, choose Rewrap, select .mp4, choose an output folder and start the function. If the tool rejects a needed stream or the target still rejects the codec, encoding is required. Do not assume rewrap preserves every subtitle or chapter.
Use the file-specific guides for MOV to MP4, MKV tracks and subtitles or HEVC to H.264. For private or large footage, compare local and online options before uploading it.
If the new file still fails
- The extension changed but playback did not: inspect the actual codec rather than renaming again.
- Black picture or washed-out highlights: check HDR and destination support; use a documented color-conversion workflow.
- Missing sound: reopen the source and confirm the intended audio track was selected.
- An upload still fails: check its size, duration and resolution limits, which a container change does not remove.
Common questions
Can I change the extension in File Explorer or Finder?
You can rename a copy, but this does not rewrite a video container. Only use renaming when the real format is already compatible, such as a verified unprotected MP4-format M4V.
Does changing format make a video smaller?
A remux usually leaves the media payload much the same size. Encoding may increase or decrease size according to the source, codec and settings.
